As his mothers condition worsens, Conor has been facing an ongoing struggle in coming to terms with his others mortality, and the stilted, painful way in which other people treat those with the disease and their loved ones.'For Conors estranged father, cancer is an unmentionable, a barrier that sits between him and his son and that can only be dealt with in platitudes while for the children at school its something that marks Conor out as different, resulting in his isolation from the others. Twelve year old Conor has been watching his mother slowly succumb to terminal cancer, a disease that is famously not only a physical disease, but also a social one. So opens Patrick Nesss' A Monster Calls, a brilliant and moving exploration of grief and loss and of the different paths different people take in dealing with them.

His confession is also backed up by a wealth of independent documentation. Using information never published before, the book uses Marcello's own words to his closest associates to describe the plot. The prose of Visions of the Damned is very beautiful, and it is incredibly easy to envision Michael's "Ladies", a duo of women from Edina's life in the 11th century who provide premonitions to Michael - Edina being Michael's alter-ego in the past. Of course everyone in the present has a doppelganger in the past, so we can pretty much guess who is who along the way.Īlthough Visions of the Damned is a swell enough novel to stand on its own, I can't help comparing it to Lady of Hay because of the similarities! Both books were written during an era where male chauvinism and masculinity still ran dominant in our culture, and the pompousness of the male characters in both novels will make modern women of today absolutely gag. Like Jo in Lady of Hay, Michael (our female protagonist, ladies and gentlemen) undergoes hypnosis and discovers she existed in a past life alongside a few of her lovers. Sound familiar? Visions of the Damned is Jacqueline Marten's debut novel released in 1979, and combines elements of reincarnation and undying love. The boy's faith never left him, even when one of his rescuers an Edelweiss Pirate said to him that God would not help, just like he did not save his family. The author tells the story in a simple manner. Let's be honest, this is a true young adult novel set for 9-14 year olds, no sex, no cursing, plenty of teenage pranks on the back drop of the plight of a 13-yr old boy. Bringing laughter into the very same novel at a fast pace that attracts young minds is an art not many authors can perform. To bring the true horror of the holocaust, make it real and write for young adults could not be an easy task. How does one deal with survival after such atrocities as that at a concentration camp? How can one have faith in the world? How can one accept that a people so closely identified with a powerful God can ever accept that God again? We live in a culture that likes to gloss over pain and suffering, mask it with drugs and other things, and always end the story with a happy ending. It is one that has stayed with me from the first page, and I've never been able to shake the images brought forward, the misery and suffering, the existence of evil and brutality, the sadness and desolation. This is the longest short book I've ever read. This book was such a delight to read for me that I feel all grandmothers will also enjoy reading it to their grandchildren, as the grandchildren sit next to them and marvel at how things are so different today. No cell phones or computers, no dryers, or washers. As she takes them on a journey back to her days the children learn about the different things that were quite popular back them. It is the story of two children whose inquiring minds want to know what it was like when their grandmother was growing up. I Remember Dawn Wynne and illustrated by Andrea Vitali is a book that will take you on a journey back down memory lane as you read this to your grandchild. Adults will enjoy reminiscing about a simpler time. Children will delight in dialing a telephone, spinning a record, and touching the keys of a type writer. I Remember When.is a beautifully illustrated board book. |
