The main character, Nina, has a best friend, Sandy. If you’re going to do a novel about sexuality and specifically the media’s influence on female sexuality, you should maybe try to avoid slut shaming while you do so. I probably could have put up with this as it does stop after the first thirty or so pages, but there was a whole lotta other stuff in the book that quite frankly pissed me off. It was never introduced naturally it was all the characters talking about it as if they had just arrived in a new country, instead of having lived in this environment their entire lives. At first the world was explained by having characters explain certain parts of their world to each other, otherwise known as the “As you know.” method. The writing was nothing special and at times even clunky. This book was honestly a chore to get through.

I tossed the spiteful novel back on the shelf, disgusted more with myself than with its yet another triumph over my hesitant nature, and turned around to make my way to the exit, when suddenly a familiar title caught my attention. I fumed and cursed under my breath, exuding sheer wrath as equally classic as the book which at the moment was literally laughing in my face. Quickly I localized the recalcitrant Spaniard and, as usual, there were at least six of them in four different translations. Determined to disdain the numerous translations of Cervantes’ masterpiece, which have effectively prevented me from reading the book for over half a decade (that’s why I have never been able to read Cortázar’s Hopscotch either – neither author’s way of taking the reader by the hand/eye nor the consecutive reading order interests me), with bared fangs, clenched fists and a glare that would obliterate everything and everyone standing in my way, I stormed into the building. I went to the nearby library the other day to finally put my hands on one of the classics spelled with a capital C – Don Quixote. Redmann isn’t all edge, however-she’s got plenty of sass. The story has a definite edge, raising some discomfiting questions about the selfishly unsavory way some gay men and lesbians live their lives and what the consequences of that behavior can be. Like other books in the series, Redmann’s pacing is sharp, her sense of place acute and her characters well crafted. This is another great read from a fine author.-Just About Write Its exciting plot keeps the pages flying, while it shows that long after a front page story has ceased to exist, even in the back sections of the newspaper, it remains very real to those whose lives it touched. Water Mark is a rich, deep novel filled with humor and pathos. Ill Will is a solidly plotted, strongly character-driven mystery that is well paced.-Mysterious Reviews Please join me in hoping that book number eight is well underway.-Lambda Literary Review To top it off, you get an unexpected twist at the end. Redmann’s dialogue is, as usual, marvelous. Ill Will is fast-paced, well-plotted, and peopled with great characters. A relationship with a man who expects her to plant roots? No freaking way. Lois Lane: Fallout, by Gwenda Bond, follows teenager Lois after she moves to Metropolis. But my mom grew up loving the Superman comics in the 1950s and 1960s, so I’ve always had a soft spot for ol’ Clark Kent-and Lois Lane, of course. When I was a kid, I just couldn’t afford to spend $4-$6 a week on reading material that would last me for 20 minutes or less, so I never really got into the culture. I have a confession-I’m not a huge comics reader. When DC characters do get mentioned, people are usually talking about Superman or Batman (though that might change with the upcoming Supergirl television series!)-which is why I was so excited when I saw Lois Lane: Fallout on the shelf. With all the Marvel hype that’s been happening these last few years, it can be easy to forget that DC has some pretty awesome properties as well.
